Fits well, repels light rain, and it's warm.
This is my first Baleaf product although I had heard good things about their products from fellow runners. I needed a couple new cold weather running jackets and the prices for some of the big-name brands were from $150 - $300 or more! For me to pay that much I want to make sure they are great. Plus oddly enough, a lot of the expensive brands did not have bright colors that I want for visibility purposes. This jacket kept me warm while running at 30F and I expect it would be fine in the 20's (I am from Minnesota so my temperature acclimation may skew this a little). I have also worn it in moderate rain on 45-60 minute runs and it kept the moisture out. It seems to be pretty wind resistance as well. I just bought another one in the chartreuse color. One of the best running purchases I have found!
Bought this to be more visible while out riding. I looked at name brand cycling jackets, many didnt have the HiVis color and they were very expensive, some were fall out of your chair expensive.I have ridden with it several times now. Ranging from 23 degrees Fahrenheit to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. With base layers consisting of thermal base, t-shirt, merino wool sweater(Goodwill) and the Baleaf jacket I was a little cool while getting my bike loaded but once I started riding I warmed up.The sleeves around your forearms on the underside are of a different material and allow some heat transfer. I was concerned that it would be a problem but after many miles it actually regulated very well. The wind proof material elsewhere was great. I didnt feel any wind penetrating through the jacket. This jacket has typical front lower pockets and an upper chest pocket that will fit an IPhone, the larger screen model. The lower front pockets were nice. I could put my energy gel in the right and trash in the left. The zippers could be opened and closed with one hand and gloves. Maybe if the zipper handle was a little bigger, only thing I can think of that would be better, but worked pretty good as is.I guess the only thing that threw me off was the back pocket. The Velcro to close is strong. No worries about things falling out. The large pocket is, large and one compartment. While rolling down the road it can be hard to find things. The main reason I put my fuel in the right front pocket. I do prefer the three pocket style but once I figured out how to organize everything the large pocket isnt so bad.Overall I love this jacket. 59 (175cm) tall, 168 pounds(76kg). I bought a large and it is perfect. If youre trying to get into cycling on a budget I would highly recommend this jacket. The cycling gear or kit can be mind boggling when it comes to cost. This jacket so far has won me over.
I bought this jacket for winter bicycle commuting. My commute is approx 30 mins one way. I like wearing this jacket while riding. My chest size is 48", so I ordered the XXL, as I wanted to wear layers underneath. I like the fit, and style of the jacket. The only complaint I have is that it's not as breathable as more expensive jackets. With 3 long sleeve layers underneath, the jacket has kept me warm on 20 degree mornings. Anything over 50 degrees, and the jacket gets hot. I have found the jacket is nice when it's windy. I would recommend this jacket, even though the breathability is not as good as other jackets.
I normally wait a bit, but today was a good test.Weather (Twin Cities, MN): 48 F, misting, wet roads, no windPack: Buffalo insulated cooler backpack, white w/black trimBike: Specialized AWOLLights: fore & aft for inclement weatherUpper clothing: Lands End silk turtleneck under this jacketLower clothing: Baleaf mountain biking shorts under VERY old wind pants with leg cuff straps.Event: Grocery run to Target doing curbside pickup, about 4 miles round trip plus standing time.Sofirst the jacket fits perfectly. Im 48 chest, 47 hips, 42-44 waist depending on status of lunch. 2XL met those measurements per the chart and room for a modest sweatshirt underneath. And a zipper garage! Honestly, lead with that Ill buy anything. I hate beard snags.During the ride I was quite toasty, Im a sweater regardless of breathability of fabric, and I could feel the areas without the fleece letting wind whoosh. The back was covered by the heavy insulated pack, but easy to zip up or down the front to accommodate breezes from forward movement.Dry inside from rain, its misty, but rained more thoroughly earlier. I have an actual rain jacket for downpours since Id always rather play outside. The arms are a tad long, Im 58 T-Rex build, but the wrists are nicely held by a soft, elastic like gauntlet. More like a thin Neoprene feel than gathered wristlet. The chest pocket easily holds an iPhone SE, larger would struggle. Also kept my phone dry from mist and my sweat, so bonus points.I already love the jacket, no loose strings or unraveling spots, and itll make a great layer under wool for colder winter commuting.Update 11-20-2024:Nearly daily use commuting to and fro, often work, but some smaller grocery runs.Monsoon (MN version): 47 degrees F, rotten headwind: I stayed dry inside a saturated jacket. It gets wet, but I dont, and neither did my phone in the outside chest pocket. Dries quickly just hanging up.Snowing, 27-28 F, proof Mother Nature hates me as my pounding headwind streak continues, 14 years running: 6 mile ride in blowing snow that would accumulate if the ground temp was lower. Rosy cheeks, frosty toes (wool socks but no overshoe), Nike therma pants, Lands End silk crew, a rag polyester tshirt, Pearl Izumi lobster gloves, and this jacket. Walked outside, felt cool, perfect for exercise. Solid headwind kept my speed very poky (lapped by a tortoise), still quite comfy in jacket. At the end of chores and fun my back was very warm, again thats the pack I wear, without that pack I might have considered a wool tshirt instead of the closest one. Love this jacket. Even with hand pockets open its not too much air moving through.
