Running Is Not Cancelled (1) :
Virtual Spartan Races X @Barhuma_Kool

Virtual racing.
What a GREAT idea.

The world we live in today is quite different from what it was around the same time last year. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting every aspect of life, sports events are not an exception. A great deal of events with mass participation, including marathons and races, have been canceled.

Events are canceled,
but running is not.

In today's #RunningIsNotCanceled, we will walk you through the world's largest virtual race - Spartan Virtual Race - and how to go about it.

We also invited our ambassador @Barhuma_Kool to share with us his Spartan journey.

 Spartan Virtual Race

Virtual Spartan Races

Virtual Spartan Races

Spartan Races are a series of races with varying distances and difficulty levels held not just in the U.S. but also in 30 other countries around the world.

Every weekend, Spartan will be hosting a different  Virtual Spartan Races distance. These events are open to racers around the world. No registration is required.

Each Virtual Spartan
 Race consists of a run and obstacles.

If running outside isn’t an option, you can also complete a cardio equivalent. You’ll take on push-ups, mountain climbers and more to finish.

Earn a free global leaderboard spot and virtual medal, or buy a Virtual Race Upgrade and get rewards mailed to your doorstep.

The Challenge

The challenges that you can participate in virtually include:

· Sprint – 5K run + with 20 Obstacles
· Super – 10K run + all Sprint obstacles and 5 additional obstacles
· Beast – 21K run + All Sprint and Super Obstacles and 5 additional obstacles
· Ultra – 50K run + Beast Obstacles * 2

The best part is if you cannot participate in a run outdoors, you can go for run substitutes, including treadmill, bike, rowing machine, ski erg, jump rope, swimming, bear crawl, and stair climbing.

For more details about the obstacles and run substitutes, visit the Virtual Spartan Race webpage. And use the link to know more about the event calendar of the year.

How to Submit the Proof?

You can take up the challenge and can complete it during the week. And once the challenge is complete, all you have to do is upload the proof of your workout on this link. It can either be a link to your social media post, or evidence from a fitness tracking app such as Strava.

And once you submit your results, sit back and wait for your virtual medal, certificate, and a spot on the global leader board.

We've reached out to @Barhuma_Kool,
the 9-time Spartan Virtual Racer,
who recently just made it into top 3 in Spartan Sprint.

※ From you IG feed, we saw that you just made top number 3 in Spartan Sprint! Congrats! What has changed compared with your first Spartan?

@Barhuma_Kool: Spartan Virtual Race

Lots have changed since my first spartan race June 30, 2019.

First, I have always been into functional fitness from a very young age, I rarely lacked the commitment to getting the job done. I just was never offered the outlet to exhort my years of training into.

@Barhuma_Kool: Spartan Virtual Race

Ever since my first OCR race I said, I know I can make it to the top of the Spartan race leader board because I knew the amount of work I put into my training even with no goal. So I can only imagine how smart I would train now; because now I have a world record goal.

The OCR racing world opened the outlet for me to show to myself what I am capable of. Just keep in mind in the Spartan field I crushed all the obstacles on my first try except the spear throw and the running.

I changed my workout regimen, instead of just doing calisthenics, I incorporated more leg and endurance training into my weekly workouts. Let's just say my legs got much bigger and stronger since a year ago, and I am HUMBLED for it.

※ Virtual Races versus Real Races?

@Barhuma_Kool: Spartan Virtual Race

Virtual races are just more what I am used to doing indoors. ( Looking forward to Dekafit and Hyrox in the near future.)

I think most people who are life long fitness addicts go back to what they know works. I use to cycle all the time for 30-miles 2 days a week along with my regular strength training. When Spartan gave us the option to use bikes or treadmills or spin bikes etc, I was confident my muscle memory from years ago would kick back in. So I jumped on my spin bike, pushed, and peddled as fast as I could.

As for outdoors even though I love it, it doesn't work in my favor, mainly when it's too hot and I am allergic to the UV rays of the sun. So it's a mental game constantly beating down on me, I spend too much mental power worrying "will I suffer from the burn".

Let's just say, I believe I can conquer the virtual race world but still have a long ways to go for the Real Spartan Races, only time will tell. I am not concerned about the obstacles just curious how fast I can finish a real Sprint In the future, until then looking forward to attempting a top spot this Spartan Virtual race Beast Weekend, 63k on the spin bike, I am geared up. Aroo.

Find @Barhuma_Kool on IG, take up the virtual challenge, and grow together!

……

Stay tuned for episode two, in which we will be chatting about another virtual race that is happening right now - Virtual Ragnar.

We are more than happy to feature your VR story. Just shoot us a message on IG @baleafsports and let's chat!
