Running Is Not Cancelled (2) :
Virtual Ragnar X @stretchruncoaching

Virtual racing.
What a GREAT idea.

The world we live in today is quite different from what it was around the same time last year. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting every aspect of life, sports events are not an exception. A great deal of events with mass participation, including marathons and races, have been canceled.

Events are canceled,
but not running.

Joining us today for #RunningIsNotCanceled (2) is @stretchruncoaching,
with whom we will be chatting about the Virtual Ragnar she took part in a while ago.

Ragnar race is a series of long-distance relay races based in the Salt City Lake. These group races allow you to think and accomplish unimaginable targets!

From chasing the moon to climbing the 100 tallest summits, group participation in a Ragnar Race will enable you to achieve the inconceivable.

But with the COVID-19 outbreak, it is impossible to arrange the regular team races, and Ragnar has postponed all mass participation races till fall this year. However, you don’t have to live without running this year. You can participate in the Virtual Ragnar Race.

Following the same principle of teamwork, all you have to do is pick your challenge and choose a team of your choice. Whether you want to run with your siblings, close friends, or cousins, the option is yours. And just like all Ragnar Races, the goal will be a group goal.

How to Go About it?

All 2020 virtual events will be held on the weekend of your scheduled event. However, you don’t have to participate in person. Instead, all you have to do is browse the challenge, choose your team, and complete your challenge at any location with your team.

Even if you have registered for the event earlier, you will still receive a follow-up email on the Monday before the event to update your group information and the challenge your team will be taking up. For the Year 2020, you can choose the race using the event calendar for the year 2020.

And obviously, all the hard work you do for this virtual race will not go in vain. Once you submit the evidence, you will get your virtual medal and the sense of accomplishment that you can enjoy with your team.

@stretchruncoaching took part in the Virtual Ragnar in May, and we have reached out to her and chatted about this amazing experience..:)

"It was an amazing experience. It brought along the adrenaline rush more than I could have ever expected. Our team of 12 ladies killed it, dropping the heat like it was nothing! We completed 202 miles via 36 legs of running (each runner running 3 times but the mileage varied and wasn’t distributed equally) in 27:54:37 which comes down to an average of 8:17 per mile!"

※ How did the race go? And how fast were you?

The race was amazing!

It was so much more competitive than I envisioned it being, and I was anxious, excited and nervous before each leg! I ended up running a total of 19.9 miles over a 20 hour period and averaged 7:29 min/mile over the 3 different legs.

My first leg was 6.7 miles at a 7:21 pace, my second leg was 5.9 miles at a 7:13 pace, and my third and final leg was 7.3 miles at a 7:49 pace…

I was dying by that third leg and gave it literally everything I had in me, which was so hard as I was gassed from mile 1.

※ We saw from your feed that you fell in the street during the race. What happened?

Yes!

I fell crossing a 4 lane road during my first leg! It was quite scary, as a car was barreling down on me, and I had fallen hard. I was on a trail, and that trail hit concrete at the street crossing, and I just wasn’t paying attention to the ground well enough. My hands were scraped up and my knee was bleeding, but I had a race to complete and I knew others were waiting on me to finish the leg, so I had to dust myself off quickly and keep on running.

※ What have you gained from this extraordinary experience?

I realized through this Virtual Ragnar experience, that racing, even in this crazy pandemic, can still occur. It just looks so very different. But as runners, we can rise and adapt and take on a new role in racing. We don’t have to shy away from running, or even racing, as we can still be challenged and find community and commit to a goal, even if it is virtual!
